Valley Communications Incorporated: Wired to the Max

Produced by Matt Duncan & Written by Eric Gundberg

As our world grows interconnected, the means that connect us are get increasingly more complicated. Thankfully, companies such as Valley Communications Incorporated are helping customers untangle that mess of wires and to make some sense of it all. Founded in 1983 by President Ken Hurst, Valley Communications specializes in the design and installation of voice, data, and video network cabling.

With over 27 years in the industry, the firm has amassed a reputation for completing highly technical projects on time and on budget. The firm has also attracted a client base that any company would envy, including household names like eBay, Verizon, Google, E*Trade Financial and Symantec. The company has grown from its humble beginnings into one of the industry’s largest low-voltage tech firms, with 85 employees serving companies all over Northern California from the Valley corporate headquarters in Sacramento, Calif.

One of the things sets Valley Communications apart from its competitors is that it bucks the industry-wide practice of employees jumping from firm to firm. “Most of our management staff averages over 15 years of experience with Valley, and the core staff has been here an average of 10 years,” explains Hurst. “I take it as a personal accomplishment that people have stayed with me for so many years. Typically in this industry, employees go from firm to firm always looking for something better. It’s very rewarding to know that my
employees are happy here.”

Wide Variety of Services

The firm’s internal happiness extends to any potential clients looking for cost-effective, innovative, expectations-exceeding solutions. Valley Communications offers potential clients a wide variety of services, including Outside Plant Construction, structured cabling, data center design and construction, design-build, fiber optic services and a very consumer-friendly electronic disconnect/reconnect (EDR) service. Employees from Valley Communications will come into a facility that is being relocated and eliminate the confusion and loss of production that typically arises when individual employees or moving companies attempt to make sense of the complex wiring systems that keep operations running smoothly. The EDR team is capable of effectively
handling a simple office move or the complex relocation of a corporate data center.

Because of its impressive list of services, Valley Communications attracts a wide variety of high-profile projects. The firm recently started work as the low-voltage contractor for the $173 million renovation and construction project at Enloe Hospital in Chico, Calif. The finished project will meet California’s new strict seismic guidelines and will consist of a new five-story patient tower, a single-story emergency center, and a single-story surgical center. The expansion will double the size of the facility, adding 190,000-square feet of space. The project poses a challenge for Valley Communication’s team because of the project’s accelerated schedule – the client wants the project completed by late 2011 – but it’s nothing the company can’t successfully complete.

High-profile Clients

The employees at Valley Communications have yet to come across a project they couldn’t handle. The firm recently just completed a project for the California Independent System Operator (CAL ISO) – the non-profit public benefit corporation that is responsible for the operation of the majority the high-voltage power grid for the western United States.

“We built them a new campus, a data center, and a public building that was a very detailed project. They used our design-build team for their low voltage and data systems. Because our work is so technical, we like to keep as much in-house as possible,” says Hurst.

Valley Communications has an excellent reputation for its design-build projects because the firm employs a team of expert engineers that help its clients through design, planning and construction of their communications infrastructure projects. The company has four Registered Communication Distribution Designers (RCDD) on staff, which helps ensure that each project will be delivered according to the client’s needs. More information about these and some of the other projects that Valley Communications has completed in the past can be found on the company’s website at www.valley-com.com.

Also ensuring that the company stays on top is the fact that Valley Communications has partnered with some of the leading manufacturers like Systimax Solutions, Levitron, Corning Cable Systems, Berk-Tek Ortronics and Panduit. Those partnerships allow Valley Communications to provide the best solution for each client and to remain ahead of the competition, whether a project involves implementing a new facility or upgrading existing wiring.

With an impressive array of evolving services, a track record of successful projects, and a roster of repeat and referral clients in place, Valley Communications Incorporated has established its upward trajectory as a leader in designing, installing and maintaining network cabling infrastructure.
